Lines 1-5- "Yoyo" is a kakekotoba meaning both "segments of bamboo" and "generations." "lkaho no numa no" (of Ikaho Marsh) is a makurakotoba linked to "ika ni" (how) in line 5 by the sound repetition. Ikaho Marsh may be Haruna Lake in Gunma Prefecture. Lines 20-24- "Chiri ni tsuge" (dust after chariot wheels) suggests "second best," "following the precedent of Hitomaro. " The phrase also appears in the Chinese Preface to the Kokinshu~. " Tsumoreru" (heaped up) is an engo for "chiri" (dust). The suggestion of the preface that former sovereigns sought their ministers'opinions in verse is reflected in these lines. Lines25-29- Lines 25-28 refer to a story in the Shen hsien ch'uan 神仙伝 that tells of a dog and rooster consuming an elixer prepared by Liu-an 劉(リットウのない文字)安, King of Huainan, and rising, howling and crowing, into the cloudy heavens. Lines 25 and 26 have been added to the Kokinshu~ texts from the version of this poem found in the Tadamine Collection (Tadamine shu~). Lines 35-39- Line 36 refers to Tadamine's one-time position as head of the Imperial Guards. He was tranferred to the Right Guards, which were quartered to the west, the direction associated with autumn, and where he guarded the perimeters of the imperial compound rather than the sovereign's own person and rooms. Lines 70-74- "Nagara no hashi no" (of the Nagara Bridge) is a jo linked to "nagaraete" (lengthening; living on) by the repetition of sounds. For Nagara Bridge, see 826. Lines 75-79- For Naniwa Bay, see 604. Lines 77 and 78 contain another repetition- that of the phrase "nami no" (like waves). "Obo~ren" (shall drown) is an engo for "nami" (waves).
