The apartment in which Fujiwara no Toshimoto had lived when he was Middle Captain of the Right Imperia Bodyguards was no longer used after he died. Late one autumn night when the author was on his way home, he glanced in and found that the garden was overgrown and desolate. Arisuke had formerrneriy been in Toshimoto's service, and, remembering the past, he composed this poem. |
