onlookers would come to see what the reason might be For Asuka River, see 284. "Yodominaba" is a kakekotoba meaning "If it grows dark" and "if he stops." "Kokoro" (heart) refers both to the lover's heart and the depths of the river. This poem is similar to Man'yo~shu~ 1379- taezu yuku asuka no kawa no yodomeraba yue shi mo aru goto hito no mimaku ni should the endlessly flowing Asuka River hesitate grow still |
