Narihira was visiting a lady who lived in the vicinity of the eastern Fifth Ward. Since he was visiting secretly, he could not go in through the gate, but came and went through a broken place in the earthen wall. His visits became so frequent that the owner of the house heard about them and hid a night guard on the path. When Narihira came, he was obliged to go home without having seen the lady. He composed this poem. |
