歌ローマ tsutsumedomo / sode ni tamaranu / shiratama wa / hito o minume no / namida narikeri /
歌英語 although I wrap them / up my sleeves cannot hold them-- / these white jewels are / teardrops falling from eyes which / cannot see the one they love /
解釈 The Shimotsu lzumo Temple was by the Kamo River. The text of the sermon probably was these lines from the Lotus Sutra(chap.8 , "Receipt of Prophecy by Five Hundred Disciples")- "Meanwhile his friend, having to go forth on official duty, ties a priceless jewel within his garment as a present and departs. The man, being drunk and asleep, knows nothing of it" (Bunno~ Kato~ et al., The Threefold Lotus Sutra -New York- Weatherhill/Kosei, 1975@, p.177). "Me" in line 4 means both "eyes" and "occasion."
