"Hatsukari no" (of the first wild geese) is a makurakotoba linked by sound to "hatsuka ni" (barely). "Nakazora" (up in the air) and "kari" (wild geese) are engo.Wild geese were believed to be able to carry lovers' messages, and thus this poem amplifies the sequence of images of tidings, rumors, and messages that begins in poem 470. |
