解釈 The poems in Book X are products of a game in which the poet hides a given word or words within his composition. Voiced and unvoiced consonants were represented with the same symbols, and other spelling peculiarities sometimes mask the words in the transcription, but the headnotes for these poems list them and they have been italicized in the transcriptions. Often the hidden words straddle two lines; "uku hizu" (sadly not drying), representing the hidden word "uguisu," here does not, and so, functions almost as a kakekotoba. Both 422 and 423 are riddles, the answer to which is the hidden word. In some poems there is a relationship between the meaning of the poem and the hidden words; in others there is no obvious cennection. For uguisu, see 4.
